“Ozona” by Sandro Gonnella

Unique pieces for your eyes and to catch other eyes.

1. What do you create and propose to your customers in your workshop?
I create handmade eyeglass frames with the aid of a numerically-controlled machine. That’s why I call myself a craftsman of the future. I propose made-to-measure frames designed to enhance the client’s face, choosing the colours he prefers and personalizing them to his liking.

2. Why are your creations unique?
Just as a suit made by a tailor is unique because it is custom made for an individual, my frames cannot be reproduced because they are fitted to the customer’s face. Not only is the design of every single item exclusive, but also the way in which the material, colour and stones to be mounted are chosen and treated. Moreover, every customer request is satisfied and every article is guaranteed not be copied for anyone else.

3. What materials do you use and transform? Do you employ any special techniques?
Although acetate is the material I mostly use to create eyeglass frames, due to its yield and because it is easy to work with, I continuously seek materials that are innovative or unusual in the field of eyeware. For instance, one of my latest creations was an acetate, oak and silver frame, which was displayed at the ‘Alta Roma’ exhibition.

4. Where did you learn how to do this work and how long have you been doing it? Will you pass your wealth of knowledge and experience on to anybody else?
I began to design eyeglasses at the Marcolin company, in Belluno, with whom I worked on items for famous brands such as Costume National, Mont Blanc, Dolce&Gabbana, etc. Then, I created a line of frames for Centrottica in Florence, which was presented in 2004 at the Mido (International exhibition of Optics, Optometry and Ophthalmology) with great success. In 2005 I decided to produce my own creations giving them the brand Ozona.

5. In what way does your activity belong to the history and traditions of this city?
It doesn’t belong to the history of the city yet, but I hope it will soon.

6.What is your personal way of participating in the future of Perugia?
Every day I strive to put the historic centre back in the hands of young people who must bring it back to life. For this reason, I am working on a project designed to help young craftsmen to take possession of abandoned spaces left to decay.

7. What arouses your enthusiasm and what makes you the proudest of what you do?
I get a thrill when I see a product that I have designed and created with passion down to the smallest detail. I love the idea that my frames will live after me and keep my memory alive. It makes me proud that many people wear my creations with pride and speak of them as being special.

8. What is the greatest emotion that you would like to convey to someone who buys one of your creations?
I would like whomever puts on my glasses to understand that he is wearing a unique item designed for his face alone and not for anyone else’s. I would like him to be proud to wear an object that has been dedicated entirely to him.

9. How would you persuade, in a few words, a customer to enter your workshop?
“If you want to stand out from the masses don’t go around wearing just any brand, but wear YOUR OWN glasses. Come into Ozona.”

10. What are your customers’ most frequent comments about your creations?
“Finally something original!” “What wonderful colours..” “Do you really make them here?” Sometimes people can hardly believe that I am able to produce my frames all by myself in my workshop.
